The Idea of managing digital identities and being in control of your own data, sharing it only when necessary and as much as necessary, seems to be difficult to achieve through traditional centralized identity management models. Blockchain (DLT) is not a precondition for delivering an SSI solution, but there are many points of overlap between the concepts, and traits like security and transparency make it a compelling tool in achieving self-sovereign identity. Various SSI projects are underway, and provide an environment for users, companies, and governments to exchange credentials.
