Cybersecurity is an important issue in the State of Michigan and regionally across the US. Michigan is considered a leader in the country with cyber security initiatives, efforts, and activities held throughout the state.
Michigan is home to the worldâs largest industrial sector at the Automotive Corridor, many national defense and sensitive military sites, and the countryâs most critical telecommunications infrastructure. These are just a few of the many reasons why companies, government officials, and cyber professionals in the state must stay vigilant in protecting these assets from cyberattacks.
The University of Michigan Cybersecurity Initiative, The Michigan Cyber Range, Michigan Military Preparedness and Cyber Defense, and other nonprofit organizations in Michigan have taken on a lead role in providing education and training to help organizations, businesses, and individuals better safeguard their sensitive data. Annually, the state increasingly hosts well-attended cyber conferences, symposiums, seminars, and workshops, all aimed at furthering the Michigan cyber security appeal and industry.
Every year there are several Cybersecurity Conferences in Michigan. Notable examples include the annual SANS Cybersecurity Conference Michigan, the itSMFA Michigan Chapter Conference, the ISACA Detroit Cybersecurity Conference, the Educause Higher Education Information Security Conference, and the IT Security Conference & Expo in Grand Rapids. These events bring together technology experts, IT professionals, and cyber professionals from the public and private sectors to explore the latest technologies, tools, and strategies to combat the ever-growing cyber threats.
In addition to conferences, Michigan regularly holds cyber events, such as the annual Michigan Cyber Security Conference, Information Security Summit, Michigan State University Cyber Boot Camp, and SecureWorld Expo Detroit. At these events, attendees have the chance to attend educational panels, and information briefings, and receive hands-on technical training with the newest security technologies.
Michigan is falling in line with other states in the United States when it comes to cyber security. The state is taking a proactive approach by focusing on investing in cyber education, promoting collaboration and awareness, and networking with stakeholders to ensure that the right steps are taken to protect its valuable data assets and infrastructures.

The automotive cyber security risk landscape is constantly evolving, vehicles today are full of possible vulnerabilities. Malicious activity from threat actors is up 30 â 40% in 2024, and it is only a matter of time before vehicles gets compromised. Attack vectors are changing, attack surfaces are increasing daily as more technology is added, and vehicles are getting smarter and more connected to other parties than ever before. Open-source protocols, connection to back-end interfaces and the cloud, and FOTA have given attackers the ability to not only launch an attack on a larger scale but also duplicate the attack to other vehicles. Major automotive companies, mainly in Asia, are now using advanced cybersecurity as a way to get customer attention and increase confidence to buy their vehicles. With recognition growing that a compromised vehicle is not only a financial problem but more importantly a safety and privacy problem, security is being viewed as a luxury vehicle feature and a way to win customers. âGetting R155/R156 Type Approval is the minimum requirement at the baseline. If we want to win markets and gain customer, we will need to do more than that.â As the automotive industryâs drive to have vehicles connected all the time grows, and cutting-edge AI and LLMs are integrated into vehicles, vehicle cybersecurity becomes more and more important, requiring more advanced cybersecurity management systems and continuous monitoring and improvement of programs and processes. Threats are likely to triple, if not quadruple. Automotive IQ will welcome vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, thought-leaders, technology companies, insurance providers and other stakeholders to Dearborn, Michigan in March 2025, with the objective of giving them âNew Ways of Thinking from New Facesâ â which means you get to hear actionable technical insights, discover cutting-edge technologies and solutions, and learn practical strategies you can implement immediately. On behalf of Automotive IQ, I sincerely thank the automotive cybersecurity community for their support and anticipate your participation at the 15th Anniversary edition of the Automotive Cybersecurity Detroit Conference in Dearborn Michigan next year.
